1.Zapiecek:
Upon entering the charming restaurant at Freta Street 1, I was immediately greeted by the warm, inviting atmosphere that felt like stepping into a traditional Polish home. The rustic wooden furniture and vintage decor created a cozy ambiance that made me feel right at home.
As I perused the extensive menu, I was amazed by the impressive variety of pierogi fillings. After some careful consideration, I decided to sample the pierogi ruskie, filled with a savory mixture of potatoes and cheese, as well as the pierogi z mięsem, which contained a flavorful blend of minced meat and onion. Each bite of the tender, perfectly cooked dumplings transported me to culinary heaven. I couldn’t resist trying one of the sweet fruit pierogi as well, filled with plump, juicy blueberries and dusted with powdered sugar.
The friendly and attentive staff ensured that my experience at Zapiecek was truly memorable. They were more than happy to offer recommendations and share interesting tidbits about the history of pierogi and other traditional Polish dishes. Throughout my meal, they checked in to make sure I was enjoying myself and had everything I needed.
2.U Szwejka:
During my exploration of Warsaw’s culinary scene, I was eager to try U Szwejka, a bustling traditional Polish restaurant situated at Plac Konstytucji 1. As I entered the lively establishment, I was instantly struck by the vibrant atmosphere that seemed to capture the essence of pre-war Warsaw. The walls were adorned with vintage posters and photographs, adding a nostalgic touch to the dining experience.
The extensive menu featured a wide array of classic Polish dishes, and I was excited to try some of the most beloved items. I decided to start with żurek, a sour rye soup that came served in a rustic bread bowl. The tangy, hearty broth, combined with the fresh flavors of sausage and vegetables, created a delightful taste sensation that warmed my soul.
For my main course, I couldn’t resist ordering the placki ziemniaczane, or potato pancakes. The generous portion of crispy, golden-brown pancakes was served with a dollop of sour cream and a side of applesauce. Each bite offered a perfect balance of savory and slightly sweet flavors that left me craving more.
3.Hala Koszyki:
On one of my afternoons in Warsaw, I decided to visit Hala Koszyki, the renowned food hall situated at Koszykowa Street 63. As I entered the beautifully restored historic market hall, I was immediately struck by the modern and vibrant atmosphere that buzzed with energy. The mix of stylish design elements and the building’s original architectural features created a unique setting that perfectly blended the old with the new.
With a plethora of international cuisines on offer, I was excited to embark on a culinary journey around the world without leaving Warsaw. As I strolled through the bustling hall, I was tempted by the tantalizing aromas wafting from the various vendors. From fresh sushi and authentic Italian pasta to spicy Mexican tacos and fragrant Vietnamese pho, the options seemed endless.
After much deliberation, I opted to try a mouthwatering Neapolitan-style pizza from one of the Italian stalls. The thin crust, topped with flavorful tomato sauce, creamy mozzarella, and fresh basil, was cooked to perfection in a traditional wood-fired oven. The pizza was not only delicious but also reasonably priced, costing around 35 PLN.
The communal seating area provided a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow food lovers, both locals and travelers alike. I struck up a conversation with a couple sitting next to me, and we exchanged stories about our experiences in Warsaw while sharing recommendations for other food vendors to try at Hala Koszyki.
4.Krowarzywa:
As I entered the brightly lit and welcoming space, I was greeted by the friendly staff, who were more than happy to explain the menu and share their personal favorites. The menu boasted an array of creative burger combinations, featuring various plant-based patties, fresh vegetables, and mouthwatering sauces. Even as a non-vegan, I was excited to explore the unique flavors and textures on offer.
After some consideration, I chose the tofu burger, which came with a generous helping of avocado, sprouts, and a tangy mustard sauce. To accompany my burger, I ordered a side of crispy, oven-baked potato wedges, which were seasoned to perfection. The burger was incredibly satisfying, with the well-seasoned tofu patty complementing the fresh ingredients and flavorsome sauce.
As I enjoyed my meal, I couldn’t help but notice the diverse clientele – from vegans and vegetarians to meat-eaters and curious foodies – all happily devouring their burgers with gusto. The lively atmosphere and contemporary design made for a pleasant dining experience, further enhanced by the attentive and enthusiastic staff.
5.E. Wedel Chocolate Lounge:
The menu was a chocolate lover’s dream, featuring a wide array of decadent delights, from velvety hot chocolate and exquisite pralines to mouthwatering cakes and pastries. After much deliberation, I opted for a cup of their signature hot chocolate, which came with a choice of various flavor infusions. I selected the chili-infused hot chocolate, which promised a unique combination of sweetness and heat.
As I took my first sip, I was instantly transported to chocolate heaven. The rich, smooth texture and deep cocoa flavor were perfectly balanced by the subtle warmth of the chili infusion. Each sip was a delightful symphony of flavors that left me craving more.
To accompany my hot chocolate, I couldn’t resist trying a selection of their exquisite pralines, each one more delicious than the last. The delicate craftsmanship and diverse flavor combinations were a testament to the skill and passion of the chocolatiers at E. Wedel.
From the comforting flavors of traditional Polish dishes to the innovative vegan creations and the delightful international cuisines, I was constantly amazed by the diversity and quality of the food scene. Each restaurant, café, and food hall not only satisfied my taste buds but also provided unique opportunities to learn about Warsaw’s rich history, culture, and people.The warmth and hospitality I encountered throughout my gastronomic adventures were truly unforgettable, and I am grateful for the countless conversations, recommendations, and friendships that were forged over shared meals.
