Where to eat and drink in Minsk

During my stay in Minsk, I made it a point to explore the city’s vibrant culinary scene, and I was not disappointed. From traditional Belarusian cuisine to international flavors, Minsk offered a fantastic array of dining options that left my taste buds craving for more. Here are some of the highlights from my gastronomic adventures in Minsk.

1.Kuhmistr:

Located on Zybitskaya Street, in the bustling historical center of Minsk, this charming restaurant was easily accessible by foot or public transport. The moment I stepped inside, I was transported to a traditional Belarusian home with its wooden beams, vintage furniture, and cozy atmosphere.

Kuhmistr’s menu was a delightful showcase of Belarusian culinary traditions. Prices were quite reasonable, with appetizers ranging from 5 to 10 Belarusian rubles, and main courses from 15 to 30 rubles. I started my meal with an appetizing platter of assorted pickles, accompanied by a basket of freshly baked rye bread. The tangy flavors were a perfect way to whet my appetite for the dishes to come.

For my main course, I decided to try the draniki – crispy potato pancakes served with a generous dollop of sour cream. Priced at just 10 rubles, this delicious dish was not only satisfying but also budget-friendly. Another standout dish was the machanka, a hearty meat stew served with soft and fluffy pancakes for dipping. The rich, savory flavors of the stew were perfectly complemented by the slightly tangy taste of the pancakes.

The homemade kvass, priced at 3 rubles per glass, was a refreshing and unique beverage that I had never tasted before. Made from fermented rye bread, it had a slightly sweet and tangy flavor that was the perfect accompaniment to my meal. The friendly staff was more than happy to share the history and brewing process of this traditional Belarusian drink.

2.Kamyanitsa:

This led me to Kamyanitsa, a quaint restaurant located on Kiseleva Street, not far from the city center. The warm and inviting atmosphere, complete with traditional Belarusian decor, instantly made me feel welcome.

As I perused the menu, I was struck by the vast array of authentic Belarusian dishes on offer. Prices were affordable, with appetizers ranging from 4 to 9 Belarusian rubles, and main courses between 12 and 25 rubles. I decided to start my meal with a steaming bowl of borscht – a classic beet soup served with a dollop of sour cream and a side of garlic-infused rye bread. The earthy flavors and vibrant colors of the dish were nothing short of enchanting.

For my main course, I opted for the kolduny, delicate dumplings filled with tender minced meat and served with a generous helping of savory mushroom sauce. The dish was not only visually appealing but also packed with flavor, and for 15 rubles, it was a delicious and satisfying choice. I couldn’t resist trying the babka, a traditional potato pie made from grated potatoes, onions, and eggs. Its crispy exterior and tender interior provided a delightful contrast of textures.

Throughout my meal, I was treated to the enchanting sounds of live folk music, which only served to enhance the already magical atmosphere of the restaurant. The musicians, dressed in traditional Belarusian attire, skillfully played their instruments and sang in their native language, making me feel as if I had been transported to a different time and place.

3.Enzo:

The menu at Enzo boasted an impressive selection of Italian classics, with appetizers ranging from 5 to 12 Belarusian rubles, and main courses between 10 and 30 rubles. I was particularly drawn to their homemade gnocchi, which was served with a mouthwatering gorgonzola sauce. The dish was a beautiful symphony of flavors, with the pillowy soft gnocchi perfectly complementing the rich and creamy sauce. I could tell that the ingredients were fresh, and the chef’s attention to detail was evident in every bite.

In addition to the pasta, Enzo also offered a variety of risotto dishes and wood-fired pizzas, which were expertly crafted and cooked to perfection. I had the pleasure of trying their margherita pizza, which featured a thin, crispy crust and a vibrant tomato sauce, topped with fresh mozzarella and basil. The simplicity of the dish allowed the quality of the ingredients to truly shine.

No Italian meal would be complete without a glass of wine, and Enzo’s extensive wine list did not disappoint. The knowledgeable staff were more than happy to help me choose the perfect pairing for my meal, and I ultimately settled on a delightful Chianti, which enhanced the flavors of my dishes beautifully.

4.My English Granny:

This delightful British-inspired cafe was nestled on a quiet street not far from the bustling city center. As I pushed open the door, I was instantly transported to a different world, surrounded by vintage teacups, floral wallpaper, and antique furniture that evoked the charm of a cozy English cottage.

The atmosphere at My English Granny was warm and inviting, with soft music playing in the background and the scent of freshly baked scones wafting through the air. I couldn’t wait to indulge in their traditional afternoon tea, which was reasonably priced at around 25 Belarusian rubles. The attentive staff promptly brought me a beautiful three-tiered stand filled with an array of delicious treats, including warm scones, clotted cream, homemade jam, and a variety of finger sandwiches with classic fillings like cucumber and smoked salmon.

As I savored each bite, I marveled at the attention to detail and the authenticity of the flavors. The scones were perfectly crumbly and buttery, while the clotted cream and jam added a touch of indulgence that made the experience feel truly special. The finger sandwiches were light and flavorful, providing the perfect balance to the rich scones.

Of course, no afternoon tea would be complete without a proper cup of tea, and My English Granny certainly delivered in that regard. Their extensive tea menu featured an impressive selection of both classic and unique blends, ranging from traditional English Breakfast to more exotic options like Jasmine Dragon Pearls. I couldn’t resist trying a few different varieties, and each one was expertly brewed and presented in charming teapots and cups.

5.The Hooligan:

In search of an exciting and memorable evening during my stay in Minsk, I decided to pay a visit to The Hooligan, a buzzing Irish pub that I had heard great things about. Located in a lively part of the city, The Hooligan was easy to find, and its welcoming facade, adorned with Irish flags and neon signs, immediately drew me in.

Upon entering, I was greeted with a jovial atmosphere, as the sounds of laughter and clinking glasses filled the air. The interior was decorated in traditional Irish pub style, with dark wood furnishings, vintage posters, and an impressive array of beer taps lining the bar. The vibrant energy was infectious, and I instantly felt at home among the lively patrons.

The Hooligan offered a wide selection of beers, from classic Irish staples like Guinness and Kilkenny to an assortment of local and international brews. I decided to start my night with a pint of Guinness, expertly poured by the friendly bartender, who took great care in ensuring the perfect head on my beer. The taste was smooth and authentic, and I couldn’t help but feel transported to a pub in the heart of Dublin.

In addition to their impressive drinks menu, The Hooligan also served up delicious pub grub that hit the spot after a long day of exploring Minsk. I couldn’t resist trying their fish and chips, which boasted a crispy beer batter and tender, flaky fish, accompanied by thick-cut fries and a tangy tartar sauce. The generous portion size and hearty flavors left me more than satisfied.

6.Cherdak Bar:

As I ascended to the rooftop, I was instantly captivated by the breathtaking panorama that stretched out before me. The glittering city lights and Minsk’s stunning skyline provided a magnificent backdrop for a memorable evening. Cherdak Bar’s stylish and contemporary design, complete with comfortable seating areas, plush cushions, and ambient lighting, created a cozy and inviting atmosphere that was perfect for unwinding and catching up with friends.

The drinks menu at Cherdak Bar was truly impressive, featuring an array of innovative and imaginative cocktails that were expertly crafted by their skilled mixologists. I decided to try their signature drink, a refreshing concoction of gin, elderflower liqueur, and fresh cucumber, which was the perfect blend of sweet and tangy flavors. As I sipped my cocktail, I couldn’t help but feel refreshed and invigorated by the unique and delightful taste.

Cherdak Bar also offered a selection of delectable tapas-style dishes, ideal for sharing with friends or savoring as a light bite. I indulged in a plate of their crispy calamari, served with a zesty lemon aioli, and a serving of their mouthwatering bruschetta topped with ripe tomatoes, fresh basil, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze. The flavors were bold and satisfying, making for a perfect accompaniment to my cocktail.

The city’s rich history, beautiful architecture, and vibrant culture left an indelible impression on my heart, and I knew that I would always cherish the time I had spent exploring its charming streets and bustling squares.

One aspect that particularly stood out for me was the diverse culinary scene that Minsk had to offer. From the traditional Belarusian dishes I savored at Kuhmistr and Kamyanitsa, to the delightful Italian cuisine at Enzo, and the cozy afternoon tea at My English Granny, my taste buds were constantly delighted and surprised by the amazing flavors and textures that I had the pleasure of experiencing. The lively atmosphere of The Hooligan and the serene elegance of Cherdak Bar provided the perfect settings for unforgettable evenings spent with friends, enjoying great drinks and engaging conversation.
